Being Sunday at the end of tomato season I will enjoy some fresh homemade gravy.
For those of you that are not and what an idea of what this means, enjoy the below.

Happy Italian Heritage Day to you, sir!
ReplyDeleteI ponder the marvelous strength of the interests we (you & I) share, while I am also noticing how interesting some of our major non-overlaps are.
Me: insanely allergic to your favorite thing, that red "fruit" that is a vegetable but not really.
Apparently my immune system sides with those throughout history who thought tomatoes were suspicious and very possibly poisonous.
Your post prompted a quick search and I just discovered this site one second ago: http://www.tomatoesareevil.com/tomatohistory.htm
A little over the top, truly. Proof positive that anything you feel strongly enough about can easily turn into a blog, or even a full on website complete with a shopping cart.
There are no native tomatoes in Germany -- where 100% of my ancestors are from -- and in fact just yesterday I discovered from one of my sailing crewmates that the "Secret Spice" mix at Red Robin contains poison: Tomato Powder is one of the ingredients. Tragic. Red Robin even puts it on all their french fries. Lesson: Always read the fine print!
My favorite city in the world is Venice, so hopefully my deep appreciation of things Italian makes up for the tomato thing somewhat.
Thanks for your delightful mix of observations and topics.
p.s.: your full name = magnifico
